Member Presentation: Jim Bracken – Bracken’s Roofing & Building

Last week, we welcomed Jim Bracken of Bracken’s Roofing & Building, who shared his deep knowledge of roofing construction and common issues faced by property owners across the Lake District. With over 25 years in the trade, Jim took us through the structure of a typical roof, highlighting key components such as A-frame trusses, purlins, and chimney stacks—an area he revealed accounts for the majority of roofing problems.

His talk was packed with practical examples drawn from real jobs around Kendal, from replacing failing chimney flues to advising on insulation and ventilation to prevent damp and mould in older properties. Many of us found Jim’s presentation incredibly informative—especially those involved in property, lettings, or maintenance—offering valuable context for common issues our clients may be facing.

Jim’s straightforward delivery and clear passion for quality workmanship came through strongly, and the group appreciated the depth of his experience and the care taken in every job he described.
