Supporting Young Carers & Growing Local Business

A Powerful Presentation from Carer Support South Lakes

This week’s meeting saw strong business activity with nearly £4,000 in revenue generated from previous referrals. We also welcomed 8 new referrals, with 20 members attending and 1 guest visiting.

Our 10-minute presentation came from Rory, representing Carer Support South Lakes, the group’s regular charity member. Rory shared an emotional and insightful overview of the challenges faced by young adult carers—those aged 16 to 25 who take on caring responsibilities at home, often while trying to complete education or enter the workforce.

He introduced their Pathway Programme, a year-old initiative designed to support these young people in accessing education, apprenticeships, and employment. Many of these carers develop strong soft skills—timekeeping, communication, emotional intelligence, and problem-solving—yet often lack the confidence or support to transition into work.

Rory challenged the group to consider whether this local, often overlooked pool of talent might hold the essential skills many businesses say they’re struggling to find. He shared real-life examples, including “Zara,” a young carer who, with the charity’s support, is now working towards a career in the police—an inspiring reminder of what’s possible with the right guidance and opportunities.

Carer Support South Lakes also offers to work directly with employers, helping to make small accommodations and open up honest conversations that support both the carer and the business.

Rory’s presentation was a powerful reminder of the potential that exists within our community—and how local businesses can play a part in unlocking it.
