Waste into Wellbeing: Transforming Kendal with Community Food Projects

Development manager for Waste into Wellbeing (WiW) Stacy Hurley was joined by helper Claire Wickham to introduce us to the volunteer led social project in the heart of Kendal.

Lead by South Lakes Action on Climate Change (SLACC), they are creating a vibrant and resilient community by bringing people together around good food.

As well as supporting local residents by providing good food and information about healthy diets, WiW reduces food waste, a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions.

90+ dedicated volunteers collect surplus food from around Kendal to deliver 4 key projects:

·        Kendal People’s Cafe – A vibrant and social pay-as-you-can cafe

·        Kendal Community Larder – Offering arange of surplus fresh, chilled and frozen foods for a minimal donation

·        Lunch Bunch for vulnerable elderly residents

·        Kendal Community Kitchen – Offering cooking events to Kendal’s residents, and work and life experience opportunities to students and vulnerable learners
